Moose Ecology

Moose ecology continues to be an exciting field of research for many ecologists. By studying moose ecology, ecologists are learning much about this majestic animal, which is often misunderstood by the general public. Moose have very few predators, and often a wolf pack will not intimidate a strong moose in its prime. The only predator of moose on Isle Royale, wolves most often attack young or frail moose. The ecological moose studies, along with wolf ecology studies, done by Dr. John Vucetich, Dr. Rolf Peterson, and others are featured in the Solex Media educational video, Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale.

The ecology of moose on Isle Royale is much easier for ecologists to study because of the isolated nature of the island, located in the middle of Lake Superior. This isolated ecosystem of Isle Royale has not allowed many species to colonize there. The moose on Isle Royale have only been present since about 1900. Specifically focusing on how moose and wolves interact, this ecology video by Solex Media highlights the natural history of moose and their survival against wolves on Isle Royale.

Learning about moose ecology on Isle Royale, viewers of this moose-and-wolf DVD will come to understand the interconnectedness of moose and wolves. Annual, ongoing studies of moose-and-wolf ecologies on Isle Royale also reveal important data about their populations and habitats. Moose ecology on Isle Royale is studied through the collection of moose carcasses and measuring vegetation growth. Insights about moose and their ecology are gained from how much browse is available and how moose herbivorous activity affects the plant community. Moose ecology is dynamically presented in this Solex Media video by a slide presentation with Dr. Vucetich.
