This audio documentary explores the link between wood-fired saunas and the Finnish-American subculture of the "sauna belt," a region across the North Central US heavily populated by descendants of Finnish immigrants. For these snowbound northern communities, "taking sauna" is not a brief stop in a warm room at a spa or hotel, but rather a high-temperature experience that is finely crafted, slowly savored, and creatively raised to an art form. Through extensive interviews with community members and an expert on Finnish-American cultural heritage, the practical benefits and cultural roots of Finnish sauna are brought to life through high-quality sound recordings.
